Motif vs Scrivener

Scrivener’s writing software can feel overwhelming and outdated. Motif gives you a clean, modern space to create—with all the tools you need and none of the complexity.

Write From Anywhere

No need to download an app and deal with complicated file syncing. Motif lives in the cloud, giving you instant access to your writing from any web browser. Your work is automatically saved and securely backed up, so you never lose a word.

Stay in Your Creative Flow

Focus on writing, rather than learning software. Motif organizes your projects to mirror the way you write, with three clear spaces for writing, planning, and research. Find every tool where you expect it, so you can skip the tutorials and finish your draft.

Visualize Every Plot Point

Leave behind Scrivener’s text-heavy interfaces and basic corkboards, and see your story take shape. With Motif, you can add images to characters and settings, gather inspiration in collage boards, and plot every character arc and story beat with flexible freeform boards.

Built for Storytellers

While Scrivener tries to be everything for everyone, Motif is purposefully crafted for storytellers. Character development, world-building, and plotting aren't add-ons, but at the heart of what we do. The result? A powerful, focused platform without the feature bloat.

Compare Features

Motif combines powerful organization with visual planning tools in a clean, modern interface. Write more freely, plan more effectively, and bring your stories to life.

Experience a writing platform that works with you, not against you. No complexity, no barriers. Just the tools you need to tell your story.

Why Writers Switch to Motif

I love the idea of Scrivener, but every time I tried it, I found the interface overwhelmingly complicated. Motif has all the organization, but a more user-friendly layout! There are also pre-made templates if you like the structure of having them. I'm going to get so much mileage out of the worldbuilding kit.

Novelist and Poet

So many planning features! Definitely reminding me of Scrivener except the interface is a lot friendlier. It’s pretty cool (especially for any plotters).

Aspiring Author

I love that it's easy to use, and the templates are really helpful. I like that it is a web-based program, rather than something I'm storing on my laptop. Also, the support folks are quick to respond to questions. I'm rewriting a novel on it and it's helping me deal with all my moving pieces.
